Fire crews tackle moor blaze              2/4/14

A moorland fire on Lewis was still burning earlier this morning.

Fire crews from Stornoway and Shawbost fought the spreading heath blaze at Achmore from 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Flames ran over a two square mile area said Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Firemen targeted water jets on the advancing line of fire while beaters were also used on the flames.

The fire was contained late last night but a watch was maintained on the area.

No houses or buildings were in danger as the fire line ran across open moor, though a conifer plantation, on Callanish grazings outside Garynahine, would have been at risk if it continued.

Fire crews were called out to the location for two hours from 5.30am today (Wed) when a small 100 square metre patch flared up again.
