Two islanders who caused a fracas in a Stornoway bar two hours after the bells on New Year's Day have been fined.

At Stornoway Sheriff Court, Jason Macaulay, 43, of 18 Seaforth Road, Stornoway, admitted assaulting a doorman.

Lorne Wright, 44, of Holm, pleaded guilty to a breach of the peace acting disorderly, struggling with two staff members and pushing one of them.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith told the court that the pair were both asked to leave on Hogmanay.

But they returned by 2.15am and, again, were asked to go away again.

Staff observed a confrontation on CCTV and the duo were "causing a hassle" in the outdoor smoking area.

They were told to depart the premises and a staff member tried to usher them away.

The fiscal said Wright became engaged in a struggle with two female staff. The doorman also became involved.

Macaulay was throwing punches around and made contact the doorman on the head.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said both wished to apologise and were "deeply embarrassed."

Sheriff David Sutherland fined Macaulay £300 and penalised Wright £200. Instalments are at £20 per week.
