Western Isles Area Commander Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod has issued an appeal for those out and about over the Christmas and New Year period to stay safe while enjoying the festivities.

Island police will be out and about on extra patrols, tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drugs misuse and associated criminality.

Chief Inspector MacLeod said: "Over the festive period the pubs and restaurants across the islands will be very busy with people enjoying Christmas parties and nights out with family and friends.”

He said police officers are “increasing patrols to ensure everyone has the opportunity to make the most of their evenings out in the safest environment possible.”

He added: “Although incidents of street disorder and anti-social behaviour remain low across the Western Isles, at this time of year it is common for people to consume more alcohol than usual and find themselves in situations they wouldn't normally get in.

“I would encourage safe and responsible drinking during the festive period and ensure you plan how you are getting home later in the evening.”

The chief inspector stressed: “With the recent lowering of the drink drive limit, please be especially mindful of the possible effects of alcohol the morning after your night out.”

“Stay safe by sticking with your group of friends and keeping an eye on your drink and belongings when out socialising.

“Local officers are committed to ensuring communities are kept safe all year round but with the busiest time of the year upon us we aim to ensure everyone has a very happy - and safe - Christmas and New Year."
