Heavy weather disrupts ferries            18/11/10

There was far too much of a strong breeze in the Western Isles for wind farm chiefs today. Gales hitting the islands threw their travel plans into disarray.

The Stornoway ferry was cancelled for the second consecutive day and Lewis WindPower representatives scrambled to make last minute arrangements to catch flights to the mainland though one of their vehicles has been delayed until tomorrow’s sailings.

Supermarket shelves were bare of essentials as the vessel was storm-bound in Ullapool since Wednesday morning. Some supplies got through on the more sheltered Harris route.

The MV Isle of Lewis will embark on a shuttle of three return sailings from 5am on Friday to try and clear the huge backlog of traffic.

Heavy seas hammering the MV Loch Bhrusda forced her to turn back to Barra without completing her first sailing to Eriskay and South Uist this morning. All her trips ended up being cancelled as the adverse weather continued during the day.

Passengers were warned that the Barra ferry could be disrupted but the MV Clansman ventured out in the afternoon hoping to make Castlebay at 8.30pm tonight.
