A man who died after falling overboard from the Harris ferry has been named.

Northern Constabulary said he was Jozef Johanna Henricus Foliant. The 49-year-old is originally from Holland but lived at Cornhill Gardens, Aberdeen.

Police are investigating claims that Mr Foliant was earlier involved in an argument with a female travelling with him on yesterday afternoon’s Tarbert to Skye ferry.

The MV Hebrides initiated its Man Overboard procedures after other passengers raised the alarm when the ship was two miles off Uig.

The ship made a hard turn back towards the man in the water and its fast rescue boat was launched. Sea conditions were good with little wind and the man was pulled onto the rescue within about 15 minutes.

Attempts to recusitate Mr Foliant were unsuccesful. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The incident delayed the MV Hebrides’ sailing to Lochmaddy as police interview witnesses onboard. The vessel did not arrive in North Uist until the back of 11pm last night.
