The main mainland road link for the Barra and South Uist ferries is closed tonight due to safety concerns.

A 150 tonne boulder is at risk of toppling onto the carriageway at the Rest and Be Thankful on the A83, said trunk road maintenance firm, Bear Scotland.

Prolonged heavy rain above the road caused a landslide onto the road last week.

A lengthy detour via Crianlarich is in place.

The boulder is sitting 175m on a steep slope above the roadway.

The Old Military Road local diversion route is to open on Tuesday using a traffic convoy system.

Delays are expected over the next two days until the huge stone is removed using explosives.
