Wild seas failed to deter the crew of the MV Clansman getting islanders home to Barra on Monday night.

 

With a force eight gale in the open water, her skipper detoured off her normal course to gain shelter in the lee north of Rum and Canna - the longer route also avoided the worst of a heavy swell.

 

His timing seemed spot on as wind gusts of 50 - 60mph had settled down to a fresh breeze on the final exposed stretch to Castlebay.

 

 

 

Ferry takes detour through gale

Passengers still endured a bumpy voyage and the adverse sea conditions, and diversion, delayed the vessel by nearly two hours.

 

However, her arrival means the vessel is in position for an inward sailing to Oban on Tuesday.

 

The unseasonable bad weather caused a number of ferry cancellations on the west coast.
