Ferry berthing fenders need replacing           27/9/14

Some £300,000 is required to replace fenders at Comhairle-owned ferry ports in Leverburgh, Berneray, Eriskay and Barra.

The majority of the affected fenders – which provide a protective cushion for inter-island ferries as they berth – at the ports now need replaced.

The current fenders have been in place since the beginning of the inter-island ferry services.

The Sound of Harris fenders have been in place since 1996. They were installed at the Sound of Barra slips in 2002.

The funding plan will go to the full council for approval next week.

The fender replacement programme improvement works, together with the need to upgrade mechanical equipment at the Lochmaddy linkspan and the replacement of a number of navigation bouys, have been marked as high priority by the council.

A sum of £1.3 million is earmarked for all the necessary works by the Comhairle in March last year.
