The SNP Government should immediately instruct the state-owned company, Caledonian MacBrayne, to reduce ferry fares for all private and commercial traffic, according to Labour's prospective candidate in the Western Isles, Alasdair Morrison.

Mr Morrison said the recent “massive” fall in oil prices should mean lower fuel costs for ships.

He queried why it is reflected at the petrol pumps but not through cheaper ferry fares.

He said: “The Edinburgh Government has a duty to ensure that it is working for every community in Scotland.

Labour candidate calls for immediate ferry fare cut

6 January 2015

“I'd expect that the newly appointed Minister for the Islands, Derek Mackay MSP, would see the reduction of ferry fares as a priority. He must act immediately to actually do something positive for our islands.”

Mr Morrison said it was an opportunity to show that the Minister for the Islands title was not simply “window dressing.”

The Scottish Government, as the sole owner of Cal Mac, should require an immediate fare cut, he stated.

Mr Morrison has also urged Flybe and Eastern Airways to cut their ticket prices to reflect the reduced cost of fuel.
