Barra ferry, MV Clansman, is being diverted to Mull to help clear the backlog of traffic from a road rally.

The Mull Rally was cancelled after a co-driver was killed and the driver injured during the motorsport event yesterday.

Co-driver Andy Mort, 47, died at the scene after their car crashed into a field.

Driver, John MacCrone, aged 26, was airlifted to a hospital in Glasgow to receive treatment for injuries.

Both men are from Dervaig on the island of Mull.

No one else was was involved in the incident.

Police Scotland is investigating the circumstances.

Organisers abandoned the weekend event which attracts 150 car crews as well as thousands of spectators.

MV Clansman is diverting to the island on her way in from Castlebay to Oban this afternoon.
