Isles MP Angus MacNeil has welcomed Cal Mac’s review of alternative ferry arrangements while the Ullapool linkspan is temporarily out of commission.

No guarantees are given, though Cal Mac bosses said they would consider an option of using two ferries on the Skye  to Harris route.

The Comhairle proposes one vessel would maintain a normal service to Lochmaddy.

The second ship would undertake a shuttle run to transport vehicles destined for Lewis on top of the Tarbert traffic.

Cal Mac previously said they had thoroughly examined all options and using the relatively deep drafted ships, MV Isle of Lewis and the freight vessel, MV Clipper Ranger, between Skye to Stornoway was the only feasible solution.

However, it means a chaotic schedule, often with only one return sailing a day at inconvenient times.

At the beginning of the week, Angus Macneil met with representatives of Cal Mac over the disruption concerns.

Mr MacNeil commented: “I am pleased that Cal Mac will now look at reviewing their proposed timetable for vehicle traffic on the Stornoway to Ullapool route while works are going on to the linkspan at Ullapool.

The MP said the proposed timetable for the six weeks could be economically damaging for Lewis as this period coincides with the huge volume of traffic over the Easter holiday period.

He has urged new Transport Minister, Derek Mackay, to set up a meeting between Cal Mac, the Minister and all the stakeholders involved in the ferry issue.
