The man hired to win a £900 million ferry contract for Cal Mac is to step down.

Martin Dorchester was recruited in 2012 in a refocusing exercise to fight rivals Serco for the west coast ferry network tender.

Mr Dorchester intends to leave the company in six months.

His resignation announcement came days after the new eight year ferry contract got underway.

Under his tenure, the Caledonian MacBrayne group had a few practice runs at tendering for shipping ventures.

The company was unsuccessful in a bid to run ferry services to Sweden's largest island, Gotland.

Neither did it win the Woolwich Ferry contract to operate a vehicle service across the River Thames.

However, it did secure a £1 billion UK Government deal to run Marchwood naval port in Southampton for the next 35 years.

Mr Dorchester, who joined Cal Mac in May 2012, said: “It has been a huge privilege to work at such an iconic Scottish company.

"When I joined the company my primary task was to win the next Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services (CHFS) contract, and with that now done I believe it is the right time to step down and seek a new challenge.
