Ferry campaigner elected to Stòras Uibhist

16 September 2024

John Daniel Peteranna has been elected as a new director of Sealladh na Beinne Mòire (SnBM), the parent company South Uist community landlord, Stòras Uibhist.

Mr Peteranna won with a landslide victory. He takes up the role after the organisation’s annual general meeting being held in Stoneybridge Hall on Thursday.

He is heavily involved in the South Uist Business Impact Group which formed in anger against the mass ferry disruption annually suffered by the island.

The group - made up of local business people like Mr Peteranna - and Stòras Uibhist - delivers a strong voice to the community, particularly rattling CalMac and the Scottish Government by the scale of its organised ferry protest in Lochboisdale. Hundreds of people attended and the event dominated national headlines.

A resounding community vote-of-no-confidence against CalMac - believed to be first such declaration in west coast maritime history - forced the shipping firm to make changes.

Five candidates in total competed for one vacancy on the board with voters making their choice through a postal ballot.

Election Results:

Dave Adey - 25 votes

Norman Macaskill - 91 votes

Calum Macmillan - 33 votes

Alsitair Nobles - 52 votes

John Daniel Peteranna - votes 309

A total of 510 votes were cast including four spoilt ballot slips. Turnout was 60.82% of the membership.
