The MV Loch Bhrusda which is temporarily serving the Sound of Harris route has broken down for the second day in a row.

The MV Isle of Lewis was again summoned from Stornoway to transport a backlog of vehicles and passengers between Harris and North Uist.

Disrupted ferry traffic was diverted to Tarbert and Lochmaddy for an evening sailing of the the Isle of Lewis on Saturday.

The 6.15am sailing was cancelled but passengers were told that the vessel would resume her run couple of hours later.

However, the service was then suspended for further repairs before ferry was fixed.

With a backlog of vehicles to shift and the Loch Bhrusda running two hours behind schedule, the Isle of Lewis was called in to get people to their destination before nightfall.

This allowed the Bhrusda to stop operating earlier than timetabled to undertake maintenance tonight.

The vessel was forced to turn back to Berneray part way during her second run on Friday.

The problem could not be fixed and caused hold-ups to irate ferry passengers at both Leverburgh and Berneray ports over the day.

The Loch Bhrusda is half the size of the MV Loch Portain she is replacing and was due to carry out extra sailings to cope with the large number of vehicles travelling.
