The MV Loch Bhrusda which has temporarily replaced the larger ferry on the Sound of Harris route has broken down.

She was forced to turn back to Berneray part way during the second run of the day.

The problem could not be fixed and caused hold-ups to irate ferry passengers at both Leverburgh and Berneray ports over the day.

Eventually, the spacious MV Isle of Lewis was summoned to transport vehicles and travellers between Harris and North Uist.

The 100 metre long ship is too big for the Sound of Harris so headed for Tarbert for a 6.30pm return trip to Lochmaddy.

The knock-on effect of the breakdown resulted in the Loch Alainn making an extra run between Eriskay and Barra tonight to allow people to travel the length of the islands without getting stranded overnight.

However, it meant the Loch Alainn‘s crew working additional hours.

Cal Mac said Saturday early morning’s Eriskay ferry was cancelled due to the working time directive.
