Serco, the company competing for the west coast ferry network, has won a government "smarter working" award

The Defence Business Services (DBS) Executive Committee – which comprises Serco, military and civil service personnel – received the runners up prize in the corporate leadership category at the annual Cabinet Office ‘The Way We Work"awards.

The awards recognise teams working across the public sector for their efforts in moving towards new and smarter ways of working, helping to realise the Civil Service Reform Plan.

‘DBS’ is the MoD's centre which processes around £27bn of bills each year and is responsible for vetting employees, providing human resources HR services for 56,000 civilian staff, as well as management information services.

Serco is challenging Cal Mac Ferries Limited for a £1 billion subsidy to run the islands' ferry services for the next eight years.

Serco’s contract ends in April when management of DBS’s operations will be brought back back in-house to enable MoD to fully consider the future of its corporate services requirements.
