The Barra ferry has returned to service after a near two-week breakdown.

Repairs to the MV Isle of Lewis were held up due to serious difficulties in sourcing a new replacement oil cooler.

Cal Mac was looking at either buying a second-hand cooler or specially manufacturing one.

The ship was forced to turn back to Oban with passengers when an apparent oil leak occurred at sea on April 10, within a fortnight of starting on the route and launching an improved service.

Grocery and essential delivers to the island were stranded on the mainland for days.

MP Angus Brendan MacNeil and local councillor Donald Manford maintained regular contact with CalMac about the disruption.

Angus MacNeil said CalMac intended having the MV Isle of Lewis back in service whilst continuing to "pursue a long term solution to ensure future reliability.”

Cllr Donald Manford said: “The enormous service improvement brought about by the arrival of the MV Isle of Lewis in Castlebay was hugely welcomed; the first ever daily direct sailings with the ferry based on the island.

“It is disappointing that so soon after its introduction a technical fault has removed it from service. While, we accept that faults are sometimes inevitable this will be the third season in succession that breakdowns have seriously hampered the island's ferry."

He applauded the "hard work of everyone involved and sincerely hope we can have a sustained period of trouble free sailing.”
