A ferry passenger suffering from a suspected heart attack has been airlifted off the Stornoway ferry.

The captain of the MV Loch Seaforth alerted coastguards via an emergency VHF radio message around 4pm today.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter headed for the vessel which was on voyage from Lewis to Ullapool, said a spokesperson for Stornoway coastguard.

The 50-year-old man was believed to have had a cardiac arrest and was winched onboard the rescue aircraft which sped directly to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

There is no word on his condition tonight.
