Cal Mac has announced proposals for deploying ships to undertake island routes for a distinct improvement in ferry services and more sailings from next summer.

The MV Isle of Lewis will be transferred onto the Barra-Oban route next summer. The ship will become the dedicated vessel for the run and will undertake a direct daily return voyage between Castlebay and the mainland.

The MV Lord of the Isles will operate a daily return sailing between Lochboisdale and Mallaig from next April. The ship will also operate on the Mallaig - Armadale route. Other vessels in the west coast fleet are too big to enter Mallaig harbour while the MV Lord of the Isles is a suitable size. Being based in Mallaig/South Uist is expected to reduce the number of bad weather cancellations.

The MV Clansman, traditionally the Barra/South Uist boat will operate extra sailings on the Coll and Tiree run. The Clansman has an open deck which is required to carry dangerous goods such as gas cylinders.
