All ferries cancelled          2/10/14

All timetabled Western Isles passenger and vehicle ferries are cancelled as an incoming storm whips up wild seas tonight.

There was no ferry to South Uist or Barra today. The next ship will leave Oban at 6am Friday to Lochboisdale only. Barra travellers will have to use the Sound of Barra service to catch the 11.25am inward bound ferry from Lochboisdale.

The MV Isle of Lewis is stormbound in Ullapool and plans to depart the Wester Ross port at 4am.

Wind strengths intensified throughout Thursday and wind speeds over 70mph are expected in places late tonight.

The southerly winds will drive waves up the shore at the exposed Braighe sea wall in Point, Lewis. The strongest wind speeds are expected around the time of high tide.

The Met Office warned severe gales would affect the region into Friday morning.

It said a deep area of low pressure brought a swathe of strong winds and heavy rain towards northwest Scotland.

Winds could reach storm force 10 for a period.
