Travellers face a raft of cancelled and delayed ferry services today as a gale races in from the Atlantic.

Rough seas and a heavy swell may make it unsafe for ferries to carry passengers.

South easterly winds over 50 mph are set to whip up seas and exposed coasts, with conditions worsening over the day.

The Met Office said a severe gale is expected in the region during the day.

Shipping operator Caledonian Macbrayne warned many routes “may be liable to delay or cancellation at short notice.”

The afternoon Stornoway to Ullapool service is cancelled while the MV Clansman has pushed back her Oban departure to 7pm. Tonight’s sailings to Lochboisdale and back to Oban are cancelled.

Friday’s outward run has also been put off. The next sailing from South Uist and Barra is on Friday lunchtime.

The MV Loch Portain is on amber alert for her afternoon sailing between Berneray and Leverburgh.

Also liable to disruption is the MV Hebrides on the Lochmaddy and the Tarbert services.
