Ferries head back to sea                 6/10/14

Western Isles ferries are going back to sea after serious disruptions due to rough seas and high winds.

The bad weather is passing over the islands on Monday afternoon.

The force nine gale battered the islands and reached storm level in the southern part of the Western Isles.

Ferries were expected to sail on Monday morning but conditions were still too bad to attempt a crossing.

With 70mph winds forecast, the MV Clansman was storm-bound in Oban and could not sail to Barra or South Uist on Sunday.

It means today’s (Mon) ferries from there are also cancelled. The next service out of South Uist to the mainland will not be until Wednesday.

The Stornoway ferry, MV Isle of Lewis morning sailings were cancelled. She is now due to leave Ullapool at lunchtime. Cal Mac will issue an amended timetable for the rest of the day later.

The MV Hebrides changed her timetable for the forecasted conditions but had to cancelled her amended morning sailings.

She eventually departed Harris shortly before 12 noon for a long day of runs to Skye, North Uist and Tarbert.

Ferry traffic going via Tarbert or Lochmaddy are advised to use caution crossing the Skye Bridge due to high winds affecting driving conditions. The bridge was shut to all vehicles earlier and is still closed to lorries.
