Thousands of fish were trapped in a feeding frenzy in Stornoway harbour.

A large shoal of mackerel chased masses of sprats along the coast and into the port, forcing them into shallow water.

The surface was teeming with schools of the tiny fry frantically darting in different directions.

Trapped in the confines of the harbour, they were at the mercy of the larger fish.

Seagulls devoured hundreds beached in rock pools and along the shoreline, left stranded by the tide going out.

Many of the hungry mackerel ended up as prey themselves with a pod of dolphins lurking by the harbour mouth.

The natural phenomenon is not uncommon in coastal communities each August.
