MP Angus MacNeil has called for improvements to the Bank of Scotland cash machine facility at Tarbert in Harris.

The sole ATM in the area is regularly out of order, particularly at the height of the tourist season. It often runs out of cash due to high demand.

The problem is often compounded because the Bank of Scotland in Tarbert is only open three days per week, delaying the refilling of the machine.

Angus MacNeil is writing to the Lloyds Banking Group which owns the Bank of Scotland to request improvements to the service.

The MP said: “The Isle of Harris is a popular and thriving tourist destination and it is simply unacceptable that people are not able to withdraw cash from the ATM.

"On many occasions the local hotels and shops have had to step into the breach by providing ‘cash back’ which incurs a charge for every transaction.

“This situation is not good enough and Lloyds must take steps to provide a more comprehensive service, I am therefore writing to Lloyds to ask that they make immediate improvements to the current ATM.

He also asked the bank to install a second cash machine in Tarbert to help meet demand.
