Comhairle supports campaign for fair fuel prices 19/2/12
The Comhairle is backing a campaign for fair fuel in the Western Isles after councillor Donald John Macsween raised the issue within the local authority.
Mr Macsween asked for the council to clarify its stance on the Fair Fuels Solutions camapaign which has been running locally.
Comhailre convenor Alex Macdonald responded : “The Comhairle has been a long time advocate of acheiving lower fuel prices in the outer hebrides andin seeking greater transparency in the supply chain. I would be happy to support any legitmate comunity campaign that helps publicise and brings pressur eto bear in regard to this critical agenda.
He confirmed to Mr macsween the council would be happy to “meet with representatives of Fair Fuel Solution in order to fully understand their campaign.”
Fuel prices campaigns recently challenged distributors Scottis Fuels to explain why islanders have to pay up to £1 extra per gallon of petrol compared to mainland prices.
The fuel firm’s chairman Sam Chambers denied the compnay acted unfairly or told the retailers what to charge at the pump. He pointed out that it was worng to suggest it was the same ship which goes to Inverness and the islands.
He queried why campaigners were not lobbying Tesco to build a filling station on the islands since the supermarket chain undercut competitors on petrol.
