Western Isles Council is diverting £4 million of its scare cash into road improvements.
The money is additional to its allocated road investment budget and follows on from
an extra £2 million-
The Comhairle’s strategy is to fix crumbling roads now to stop potholes getting bigger and avoid pay more a lot more extensive repairs in the future.
The £ 4 million is being taken from money put aside for large projects but would save about £1 million a year on road repairs as well as creating some employment.
Most of the diverted cash has already been committed while councillors will vote next week to plough an extra £400,000 into tarring roads.
They are also likely to approve £100,000 specifically for measures to drain water off public roads. Lying water causes a lot of damage to surfaces especially freezing winter conditions says the council.
Last year a Scottish Government report revealed it would cost around £42 million to bring all the roads in the Western Isles up to standard.
Many island roads are not built on hard foundations but “float” above deep peat and are expensive to maintain. Numerous routes are old cart roads which were simply tarred over.
