Brian Glass of Dalneigh, Inverness, was anxiously trying to catch the last ferry out of Lewis before the bad weather came in today.

His pregnant daughter Ashley Glass is expecting a boy - Brian’s first grandchild.

With a violent storm brewing over the Western Isles, Brian just got word she was in labour in Raigmore Hospital.

The construction worker was working on Lewis with a civil engineering firm when he discovered sailings were liable to cancellation.

With no guarantee of getting to the mainland over the next three days of forecast rough seas and severe weather, The excited granddad-to-be was desperate to get on the last ferry out of Stornoway at lunchtime.

Mr Glass, who works for UB Civils, made urgent calls to his wife to pick him up at Ullapool to rush him to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

At the ferry terminal, Mr Glass (pictured above) said: “My daughter Ashley is having a wee boy anytime now. Her waters have broken. Its my first grandchild so I have to get on this ferry.

“If the van can’t get on then I am going to park it up and walk on the ferry and get the wife to meet up at the other side.”

The MV Isle of Lewis ferry was stormbound in Ullapool on Thursday night and there is no ferry out of Stornoway tomorrow (Fri) morning.

Other sailings to the weekend are at risk of cancellation due to a forecast of high swells and rough seas.
