School pupils achieved a record number of Higher exam passes this year.

Results certificates have arriving for nearly 143,000 students in Scotland after sitting the new Highers for the first time. It is also the second year of the new National 4 and 5 qualifications.

Exam body SQA said there was a record of 156,000 Higher passes - up 5.5% on 2014.

Advanced Higher passes have increased nationally by 4% to a record level of 18,899.

Some 27,902 students got their Higher English, a rise of nearly 18% while Higher modern languages passes rose by 15.2% to 7,419.

The pass mark for the new Maths Higher was lowered to take account of the level of difficulty of the paper, meaning nearly 71% of pupils who took the exam passed.

Isles MSP Alasdair Allan, who is also Minister for Learning, congratulated Western Isles pupils receiving their results today.

Alasdair Allan, said: "Many of them will have been anticipating this day all summer and I hope all of their hard work has been rewarded.”

He added: “The national figures show another strong performance by Scotland’s young people. We must also pay tribute to all of the teachers, tutors and parents who have supported them, throughout their learning, to get them to this point in their lives.

"They deserve all the praise we can give them as they are the pillars of our young peoples’ ambitions for the future.”

He said: “To those that have not done as well as they had hoped, or for those that have done better than expected, I would advise getting in touch with the exam results helpline on 0808 100 8000. They are on hand to discuss your future options.”
