Exam helpline set up             29/7/14

Many young islanders will be the first to receive new National qualifications as exam results arrive through letterboxes next week.

The message is that whatever those results might be, pupils and their parents should not panic. Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is urging people to call the Exam Results Helpline free on 0808 100 8000.

SDS’s Operations Director Danny Logue said: “People may have done better than they anticipated or not achieved the results they hoped for, but the message is that there are options and they, and their parents, shouldn’t panic.”

He added: “The first step is to call the helpline and discuss all of the options that are available and there are lots of options open to them.”

As well as the helpline, advisers will be on hand for a number of Twitter Q&As @mywowscotland to help young people access information and support. SDS’s Facebook page will feature answers to common problems, links to other bodies including SQA, UCAS, SAAS and Young Scot and help on making sure the next move is a good one.

There is also a wealth of practical post results information for young people and their parents on SDS’s My World of Work website www.myworldofwork.co.uk

The helpline, now in its 22nd year, will be open from 8am until 8pm on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 August and from 9am until 5pm until 13 August.

Advisers will be available to offer unique information on UCAS course vacancies at UK colleges and universities, confirmation and clearing, advice on modern apprenticeship and training opportunities and exam re-sits.

The new national qualifications are designed to test a wider range of relevant skills and to prepare young people better for the modern workplace. The new National 2, National 3, National 4 and National 5 courses have been available since August 2013.
