Former policeman convicted of island rape      28/2/13

An ex-police officer has been found guilty of raping two women with one sexual assault taking place Benbecula.

Stephen Cooperwhite, 35, of Paisley, was convicted after a jury trial in the High Court in ­Edinburgh.

His first victim had been violently assaulted and sexually attacked at an address in the Uists about ten years ago.

On one occasion he punched his victim on the head and hit her against a kitchen door.

Later, he became a police officer with Central Scotland Police and carried out similar attacks on a colleague in Stirlingshire between 2009 and 2010.

The police force investigated and found out about the island rape.

Sentence was deferred to later in March for background reports. Cooperwhite was refused bail and was remanded in custody.

Cooperwhite resigned from the police last year.
