Estate landlord welcomes buyout vote result                  5/5/14

Barry Lomas, the owner of the Pairc Estate on Lewis has welcomes the community decision to take control of the 26,775 acre estate.

In a ballot on Thursday some 166 people voted to purchase the land with 77 villagers against. Turnout was 62.7% out of a 388 electorate.

Barry Lomas said: “Pairc Estate welcomes the news that after eleven years of discussions with Pairc Trust, the final five years of which saw detailed offers almost being accepted by both sides, the community has at long last been given the opportunity to vote.

Mr Lomas added: “In order to achieve this Pairc Estate has made considerable concessions because the agreement which was made in December 2013 later proved to be unacceptable to the community.

“The community’s positive ballot vote has now given Pairc Trust the mandate to proceed and lawyers will be preparing the legal documents.”

He continued: “A considerable exercise is underway to provide the necessary details of title which are required by the Registers of Scotland, a task which may well take many months for them to complete because of the many hundreds of transactions which have taken place over the preceding ninety years.

“Pairc Estate will continue to be responsible for estate matters until the legal handover to avoid delays in the ongoing interests of individuals.”
