Islander Mark Haubrick is planning to walk over 2,000 miles to raise funds for Water Aid

Mark said: “I like a long walk and a few years ago walked as far as Ukraine.

This time I thought it would be good to bring benefits to others further afield, and so the walk will be a fundraiser for the charity Water Aid.

“We all take readily available water, toilets and hygiene for granted. Doing a bit towards providing water will help these people to live to adulthood.”

The trek from Mark’s front door in Stornoway to the heel of Italy, (Santa Maria di Leuca) is a distance of 2000 miles.”

He sets off Wednesday’s lunchtime ferry and will spend the night in Ullapool.

If you see him, make sure you give him an encouraging wave!

Water Aid is an international non-governmental organisation, focused on water, sanitation and hygiene. The organisation was first established by the UK Water Industry in 1981 as a response to the UN International Drinking Water decade.

Their main office premises is in London and they established its first projects in Zambia and Sri Lanka.

Since then, WaterAid has worked in partnership with local organisations in 34 countries in Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific region to help poor communities establish sustainable clean water supplies and toilets close to home, and to promote safe hygiene practices.

It also works to influence government water and sanitation policies to serve the interests of vulnerable people and to ensure water and sanitation are prioritised in poverty reduction plans.

Mark has received donations to the charity from members of his church, St Columbas, Stornoway, and if others would like to support this worthy charity, donations have be given on online through their Just Giving webpage by searching for MARK HAUBRICK - WATER AID.
