Western Isles SNP MP, Angus MacNeil, is set to be the first Scottish National Party MP to become chair of the influential Commons Committee on Energy and Climate Change.

Mr MacNeil who was the SNP’s sole nominee for the post said the committee has an "important role to play in holding the government to account and pushing the UK commitments on internationally agreed targets on renewables."

His appointment resulted calls from Highlands and Islands Labour MSPs, Rhoda Grant and David Stewart, for Mr MacNeil, to use his new role to tackle the high levels of fuel poverty in the islands.

The MSPs also pressed Mr MacNeil to ensure no further delays to the establishment of the Lewis interconnector will ensue and that steps are taken to end the unfair 2p electricity surcharge levied on customers throughout the Highlands and Islands.
