The multi-agency Western Isles Emergency Planning Co-ordinating Group (WIEPCG) has repeated its safety advice for people to stay away from the oil rig Transocean Winner whilst ongoing assessments are taking place.

The group said the oil rig is expected to be at Dalmore for some time so sightseers will get access down the narrow village road once the salvage and pollution inspctions are concluded.

Presently there are high numbers of emergency vehicles requiring to use the road. The authorities are anxious not to see a repeat of last week events when the road was blocked for lengthy periods by sightseers.

A spokesperson said: "We would continue to ask the public to refrain from parking on roadside verges on the main road, not to cross hazardous ground and upset livestock – particularly in the Dalbeg area.

‘Following the weather conditions of the past few days, coastal paths remain particularly hazardous and present a danger to the public who are attempting to gain access to this area.

"A temporary exclusion zone of 300 metres to keep boats away remains in force which means no drones will be permitted in the area as it could interfere with the salvage operations.

‘While the operation continues, the Dalmore village road will remain closed other than to emergency services and residents.

‘SEPA has been conducting daily shoreline inspections and remains satisfied that there are no signs of pollution.

‘WIEPCG is continuing to work closely with the Secretary of State’s representative’s salvage group and the national agencies environment group to protect and ensure public safety and we would once again reiterate that people should stay away from the area until such time as we advise."
