Violent winds and wild seas are set to bring major travel chaos to the Western Isles as Storm Abigail passes over.

The emergency services in conjunction with Western Isles Council will make decisions later over closing island schools on Fridays.

The Western Isles multi agency planning group met today. It said it will monitor forecasts and “decisions will be made tomorrow (Thurs) on how and if services will be affected.”

If the storm is as bad as forecast then bus services may be cancelled.

Waves over 10 metres high are forecast off the west coast of the Hebrides.

In Castlebay, the tide peaks around 6.20pm on Thursday evening and about 6.40am the following morning

High tide in Stornoway is around 7pm on Thursday and 7.30am for Friday.

Causeways and coastal roads are to be monitored with the risk of high waves washing over.

Powercuts are likely and the fire service urged people to take extra care if using candles during any power cuts.

The service also discouraged the use of gas cooking stoves indoors.
