A forensic accountant will probe the finances of a woman who embezzled nearly £20,000 from a Western Isles community venture.

Elaine Newton who faces a confiscation order under the proceeds of crime legislation, took nearly £11,524 while working as the manager of the Uig Community Shop in Lewis.

The 63-year-old, formerly of 5 Reef, Uig, Lewis, swindled the money over a six month period between February and August last year.

She also took £8,000 from the Uig Development Trust, the parent body which established and runs the store, while administrator of the organisation at the time.

She had been given six months to repay the stolen cash after pleading guilty to both charges at Stornoway Sheriff Court in October.

Newton  was told a decision whether she would go to jail or receive a payback order would be deferred to this year.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith is seeking a confiscation order under the proceeds of crime legislation to seize the monies obtained by Newton.

Lawyer Ken Macdonald asked the case be continued for three months to allow a forensic accountant to assess Newton’s finances.

He said his client had “left the island at the moment.”

Sheriff David Sutherland adjourned the case to September.
