Western Isles Poverty Action Group has written to UK Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd, raising the issue of the 2p per unit surcharge on electricity prices in the north of Scotland.

The move is in response to the energy minister’s call for the "big six" electricity companies to reduce prices for consumers.

Ms Rudd queried why prices did not seem to reflect a fall in wholesale costs.

A recent survey found 71% of Western Isles families are in fuel poverty with 18% of households in extreme fuel poverty.

Some 11% of local families spend about a third of their income on fuel.

Chairman Angus McCormack, wrote: “SSE currently charges consumers 2p per unit more than elsewhere in Scotland and the UK.

"This is a great burden on an area of the UK where housing stock is of poor quality and wages are depressed."

He said removal of the surcharge and establishing parity with the rest of Scotland and the UK, would make a very real and immediate difference to islanders.

Mr McCormack asked the energy minister to raise the issue with SSE.

He said Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is also seeking a meeting with SSE and Ofgem in an attempt to resolve the matter.
