Comhairle’s plan for local cheaper electricity scheme

The SNP group on the Comhairle has welcomed plans for discounted electricity sold through a local supply company.

The council plans to set up the Outer Hebrides Energy Supply Company which sell cheaper energy either through a deal with an existing energy supplier or a link-up with on-island windfarms.

SNP councillor Gordon Murray said the scheme should aim at delivering “cost price electricity from wind energy to eradicate fuel poverty, encourage families to settle here and help business development on the islands.”

Council’s plan for discounted energy could provide business boost, says SNP councillor

He said the council itself could save cash by buying electricity through the planned scheme.

A supply contract with the Comhairle would help the local supply company secure funding for turbines to develop the scheme further

Mr Murray said: “It would also make efficiency savings and allow monies to be diverted into frontline services instead of high energy costs.

“If a low cost energy environment could be created then economic advantages over the mainland will arise."
