A delegation from the Highlands and Islands is to meet with energy firm SSE over its 2p per unit surcharge to local customers.

Friday’s forum with SSE chief executive, Alistair Phillips-Davies will discuss the high levels of fuel poverty in the Hebrides.

Angus McCormack, chair of the Western isles Poverty Action Group, said: “People in the islands are facing the highest levels of fuel poverty in the UK and yet pay more for their electricity than consumers in the central belt of Scotland.

“I hope we can persuade Mr Phillips-Davies that this is a matter that the Board of SSE should be addressing as a matter of urgency.”

Mr McCormack will be accompanied by John Maciver of Hebridean Housing Partnership, Donnie Mackay from Skye and Lochalsh and DI Alexander from Lochaber Housing Association.
