Islanders are being urged to check if they can get a £140 discount off their electricity bill.

The Warm Home Discount (WHD) is a government scheme aimed to help low income households reduce their energy bills, particularly those in fuel poverty.

Tighean Innse Gall (TIG) said, under the scheme, large energy suppliers support people in need of a little help to pay their electricity costs.

The scheme offers a one-off rebate of £140.

Pensioners who receive the guarantee credit element of pension credit will automatically be eligible for the rebate.

People in receipt of certain benefits, on a low income or or have a disability or illness may also be eligible.

Others may also be able to apply if their supplier is part of the scheme.

Tighean Innse Gall (TIG) said this part of the scheme works on a first come, first served basis.

The agency urges islanders to apply early to avoid disappointment.

Kirsty MacLeod, senior energy officer at TIG said: “If you need help in completing an application, get in touch with Tighean Innse Gall.

"If you qualify, the warm home discount will be credited to your electricity account sometime before the 31st of May 2017.

"If you use a pre-payment meter, it will be credited to your meter during or after a top-up."
