Elderly couple in car accident     16/6/14

An elderly motorist was taken to hospital with a suspected spine injury following a car crash on Lewis on Monday.

Firefighters used specialist tools to force open the car door to free the injured man after his vehicle apparently careered off the road and onto moorland some two miles south of Dell, in Ness, just after noon.

He was eased out of his seat and strapped onto a spinal board to be taken by ambulance to hospital in Stornoway.

The pensioner’s wife was also hurt in the smash. She was described as “walking wounded” and was assisted out of the car by firemen.

The couple were believed to be living in North Tolsta. They are both in their 70s and it is understood they were driving over to visit the woman’s son who lives in Ness.

It is understood the main road at the A857 was shut for a period.

Three fire tenders, from Ness, Shawbost and Stornoway, attended the accident.

A police spokesman said the couple were taken to hospital and found not to be seriously injured.
