A drugs courier has been jailed for 18 months for trying to smuggle nearly £100,000 of drugs into the Western Isles.

 

Andrew John Kenny of Auchinleck Gardens, Glasgow, previously pleaded guilty to the offence.

 

The 47-year-old was tempted by the thought of solving his money problems by carrying 115 cannabis resin bars into the Western Isles.

 

He regularly travelled to Lewis and was contacted by dealers.

 

But police received a tip-off and stopped him at 5.30pm by the Ullapool ferry terminal.

Some 115 bars of cannabis resin were found in his holdall.

 

If cut into small transactions, the cannabis would have a maximum street value of £93,590, Inverness Sheriff Court was told.

 

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Sutherland of Police Scotland said: “Removing drugs from our communities is a priority for Police Scotland and we continue to gather intelligence from the public on those involved in crimes of this nature.

 

“Drug abuse and associated crime causes harm not just to those using drugs but to entire communities. We will continue to work with partner agencies to as part of our duty to keep people safe."

 

He added: “Local communities can be assured that any information we receive in relation to drugs offences will be treated with the utmost seriousness and will be acted upon accordingly.
