A military drone has been washed up on a North Uist beach.

The four metre long Mirach 100/5 jet drone is used by the military as an aerial target for anti-missile weapon testing.

The remotely operated device which has a third of a tonne maximum takeoff weight was discovered on Baleshare beach.

Benbecula coastguard team stood guard over the drone until it was removed later yesterday.

It is understood the drone was fired during a major military exercise at the South Uist rocket range this week.

It can be reused and has been returned to the range.

The coastguard team urged islanders not to touch any suspicious item found on the shore but to dial 999 and report the matter to the coastguard.
