A "drowsy" motorist whose car went off the road had taken prescribed drugs following a hospital operation, Stornoway Sheriff Court was told.

Christina Catherine Mattison of 12 Gead Gorm Carloway, pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith told the court that police attended an incident after her Audi A4 vehicle left the road at Shawbost at 4am on Monday 8 September last year.

The 47-year-old seem to be drowsy at the scene and was talking slowly but a breathalyser test showed she had “zero” alcohol in her system, she added.

Lawyer Ken Macdonald told Sheriff David Sutherland it was a “very, very unusual case” and a “most unfortunate” matter.

He explained Mattison had just undergone an operation on her left shoulder and was discharged from the Stornoway hospital with various prescribed medication.

He said she had not exceeded the dosage and had not felt sleepy.

Sheriff David Sutherland disqualified Mattison for a year and fined her £350.

Her not guilty plea to an allegation of causing her car to career off the road, colliding into a fence and entering a garden was accepted.
