An islander has been cleared of a charge that he killed a man by dangerous driving.

The allegation against Steven Macdonald, 22, was found not proven by a majority verdict following a four day jury trial at Edinburgh High Court.

He was accused of causing the death of fellow islander, Ivan Macdonald, who was walking home from a dance in Carinish Hall in North Uist

The 33-year-old, from Baleshare, had left the function when he was knocked down around 1.45am on Sunday, 9 June 2013.

He was treated by paramedics but died of his injuries at the scene, some 200 metres from the hall.

Steven Macdonald denies causing Mr Macdonald's death by dangerous driving at excessive speed on a single track road.

It was claimed that Steven Macdonald was texting on his iphone and failed to slow down while passing people walking along the side of the road.

The jury heard he knew he had hit something but he thought his black-coloured Renault Clio car had collided with a deer.

His front windscreen was smashed and a wing mirror damaged.

Messages had been made on his mobile phone just before the collision.

After the verdict, the judge told Steven Macdonald he was free to leave the court.
