The driver was trapped inside the mangled vehicle

She was taken to hospital in Balivanich and later flown by air ambulance to Stornoway.

Ms Coleman has now returned to the Benbecula hospital. Medics instructed she requires two weeks full bed rest without movement until a back brace is fitted.

The 20-year-old from Lasgair, Lochboisdale, is presently on morphine to try and control the pain after breaking part of her lower spine.

She said: “I was lucky to get out as the fire brigade had to cut the windscreen out of the car.”

She added: “From what I was told after the accident there was oil on the road as well as the roads not being gritted.”
