Two year drinking ban for islander            4/8/14

A Lewis man has been banned from drinking after a series of offences involving assault and drink driving.

Aulay Mackay previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman and to smashing a window at his home at 10 Uraghag, Carloway.

The 30-year-old admitted he drove a motorbike with excess alcohol with a reading of 53mg against the legal limit of 35mg.

Procurator fiscal David Teale told Stornoway Sheriff Court that around 3.45am on Sunday 22 June, the accused was banging on the living room window of the house, demanding to be let in.

He smashed a rear window, entered the property and began an argument, said the fiscal.

At one point, he grabbed the woman by the throat, “so tightly her nose started to bleed,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mackay drove off on a motorcycle but was spotted by police. They smelt alcohol off his breath when they found him later.

Lawyer Ken Macdonald explained there had been an incident earlier in the day which created an “atmosphere” between the pair.

Sheriff David Sutherland imposed a two year community payback order including 120 hours of unpaid community service work to be completed within 12 months.

Mackay has also been banned from drinking alcohol for two years.

He  was also banned from driving for one year.
