An islander has been disqualified from driving for one year after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge.

Murdo MacAskill was also fined £100 when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

The 55-year-old admitted driving with an alcohol breath reading of 27mcg against the new 22mcg legal limit on South Beach Street, Stornoway, on 1 May.

His lawyer told the court Macaskill “felt fine” after consuming alcohol the previous evening which was not unusual with the lower legal drink driving levels recently introduced.

He was spotted by police officers driving from his home outside Stornoway to a carpark in the town centre at 8.30am.

They stopped him and smelt alcohol.

Sheriff John Halley said it was a “serious offence” though his reading was “very slightly” over the limit.
