A woman who briefly jumped into the driver’s seat of a stationary car was charged with drink driving.

Smoke was emitting from the rear of the vehicle as it drove along Church Street in Stornoway on 3 January, and the driver, Claire Macleod’s  husband, stopped to check the problem, Stornoway Sheriff Court was told.

He asked her to “rev up the engine but unfortunately she let out the clutch. The vehicle moved forward and hit a van,” explained solicitor Angus Macdonald.

She had consumed alcohol and had no intention of driving, he stressed.

Macleod pleaded guilty to having a 52mcg alcohol reading against the legal maximum of 22mcg.

Sheriff David Sutherland banned her for 12 months. She was also fined £250.

She also received six points on her licence for driving without insurance.
