Drink-driver drove after night out                    14/3/14

An island youth decided to drive himself home when he couldn’t get a taxi after a night out in Stornoway at Christmas time.

But he forgot to switch on its lights and was stopped on by police officers who detected alcohol on his breath.

Ruairidh Michie of 4B Melbost, Lewis, pleaded guilty to drink driving on Macaulay Road, Stornoway, with a reading of 102mg - about three times the legal maximum of 35mg.

Stornoway Sheriff Court today (Fri) heard that the 19-year-old had been out with friends but couldn’t get a taxi around 4am on 27 December.

Lawyer Katy Begg said the teenager waited at the town’s taxi stance but none turned up and it became obvious it was going to be a long wait.

Ms Begg said he “foolishly decided to take a chance” and drove home.

He regretted his actions and was full of remorse she said.

Sheriff David Sutherland disqualified him for 18 months and fined him £500, discounted from £750 for his early plea.
